MARRYING & SPONSORING

At Borders and Beyond we are able to offer you assistance with the organizing of the documents you will require as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada to get married to a Cuban National in Cuba.

A specific process must be followed in order to get married in Cuba.  The basic requirements are as follows:

  1.  You must provide evidence of your marital status, ie whether you are single, divorced or widowed.  This requirement is in the form of either:

  2. An Affidavit of Single Status;

  3. A Certificate of Divorce in original form no older than 2 years.  If in the case your Divorce is older than 2 years than you must provide an Affidavit of Single Status.

  4. Death Certificate of previous spouse, if widowed, in original form or Notarial Copy.

  5. Original long form Canadian Birth Certificate.  In the event you do not have an original long form, you can submit a Notarial Copy of your wallet size Birth Certificate.

All of the above noted documents must be legalized by a public Notary and then authenticated by the Department of Affairs and then translated into Spanish.  You can use a private translator to do this or you can use the Cuban Embassy.  If you chose to use a private translator then you must have a public notary  make Notarial copies of your documents and then take them to the Department of Foreign Affairs for authentication.  If however, you chose to use the Cuban Embassy to translate your documents into Spanish, then you need only take your Notarized or original documents after they have been authenticated by the Department of Foreign Affairs to the embassy or consulate in your jurisdiction.  Please note that in order to marry in Cuba you must have your documents legalized by the Cuban Embassy or Consulate.

Borders and Beyond offers three different types of services in order to assist you in getting your documents notarized, authenticated and later legalized by the Cuban Embassy.

The three different types of service are as follows:

  1.  Package 1 – This type of service is for persons who are born in Canada.  This service is available at a cost of $ 475.00 plus G.S.T.  The Embassy fees are separate (fees for the translation and legalization) and  are payable to the Embassy or Consulate.  These fees depend on the number of documents submitted and generally range from $700.00.  These fees however, will be confirmed to you once your marriage papers are ready for submission and will be required to be paid separately to the Embassy or Consulate.
  2. Package 2 – This type of service is for permanent residents or persons who were not born in Canada.  The process for those not born in Canada is a bit more complicated and requires that we obtain a legalization document from the embassy or consulate of your Country of Origin certifying your Birth Certificate.    This service is available at cost of $650.00 plus G.S.T.  The embassy fees are separate (fees for the translation and legalization) and are payable to the Embassy or Consulate.  These fees however, will be confirmed to you once your marriage papers are ready for submission and will be required to be paid separately to the Embassy or Consulate.
  3. Package 3 – This type of service is for those persons who require urgent processing of their papers in order to get married in Cuba as soon as possible.  This type of service is on a case-by-case basis and will depend on your circumstances.  This service generally ranges from $800.00 plus G.S.T.  The Embassy fees (fees for translation and legalization) are over and above this cost and will be confirmed to you on consultation.

Once your documents have been submitted to the Embassy or Consulate they can take approximately 3-4 weeks to process.  (With the exception of Package 3 where papers will be processed on an urgent basis).  Please note that while we will always try to do our best to get your papers processed as quickly as possible, we will confirm to you prior to our engaging in this type of service what the Embassy advises us with respect to the length of time.  We cannot however, be responsible for the Embassy if they take longer than initially quoted.
